Action Highlights

Right now is the low season on Koh Tao, but that does not prevent us from getting some good work done. The other day after returning from performing some DSDs on a small beach near our bay we decided to do a clean-up. The beach, which has nobody living around it, was literally covered in Plastic bags, bottles, and foam.

If you are a scuba diver from Montreal, Quebec, Canada - or from around Montreal - we've created an event right here on the Project Aware website, to get us all working together for this planet... Please reserve Saturday, Sept. 15, in your agenda:

Three of our DMT's, led by instructors Sarah Van Name and Scott Butz, conducted a monitoring project of our adopted nursery off of Sairee Beach on Koh Tao. First, they were given a lecture by Sarah, detailing what coral is, what it needs to survive and threats to it's health. On dive one, they conducted a coral health check, counted missing corals and searched for and collected threatened fragments near the shore. Back on the boat, with the fragments safe in a bucket of salt water, the instructors went through the fragments showing which ones were good for transplant and why.

It has been a a stellar month of Eco work at Crystal Dive & Eco Koh Tao with most of it being conducted at one of Koh Tao’s most popular local dive spots, Twins.

Twins is also one of two sites maintained and managed by Crystal Dive/Eco Koh Tao as part of Koh Tao’s ‘Adopt-a-Reef’ program. We have a number of environmental programs going on at the moment, some experiments but all of it is helping to enhance the spectre and appeal of Twins.

We are a PADI dive school based in Golfe Juan in the South of France.  We organise bi-annual underwater clean ups off a beach we use for some of our confined water training.  The last event held was on Sunday 13th November, seven divers participated, everyone had a great time, really good buzz of participation and loads of debris accumulated and brought up to keep the site in good condition.  Well done our divers!

At Coral Grand Divers we take Marine Conservation very seriously so we decided to join Project AWARE's Big Shark Shout Out and give a fighting chance to sharks!

The first step was to ask all our fun divers and students to sign the petition to ban shark finning. The response was amazing and everyone welcomed the idea and showed real interest and concern for topic. We also asked all our customers to make a small donation for Project Aware, in exchange for a cool souvenier: a rubber bracelet with embossed Koh Tao 2011.

AWARE's Big Shark Shout Out Week was all about voicing concern for diminishing shark populations all over the globe. Sharks are an essential component of marine ecosystems and their removal has devastating and widespread consequences. We must take immediate action to conserve shark populations.

Signing the Petition and Shouting Out on Shark Walls shows leaders internationally that large numbers of people want positive changes to shark policy. Calypso supports Project AWARE's shark protection advocacy projects through donations from diving and other events.
