Crystal Dive Resort Conserving Coral Reefs, Koh Tao, Thailand

Crystal Dive ResortCrystal Dive Resort have taken to the waters of Mae Haad Reef to go eco in a big way. Since becoming a Go ECO operator in June the team have secured a new mooring buoy to protect the reef from anchor damage, set up a CoralWatch programme to ensure reef preservation and organised massive clean up missions for World Ocean Day.

With human activity threatening the health of 60% of the world’s corals all these measures to protect coral reef eco systems will make a lasting difference.

CoralWatch makes monitoring coral reefs easy. The CoralWatch chart uses a series of colors representing different stages of bleaching and recovery. Data collected from monitoring activities is then entered online and analyzed by scientists to answer questions on coral bleaching and recovery patterns as well as the severity and duration of bleaching events.

Such monitoring will be imperative to future management and sustainable development surrounding one of the worlds most diverse and important ecosystems.

Team Leader Nathan Cook pictured with some Crystal Ecodivers. They took to the waters of Mae Haad, Koh Tao to test some of the corals for possible bleaching.

Project AWARE needs more dive centres to get involved in the CoralWatch campaign click here for more information.
