Another Fishing Net

Downbelow Marine and Wildlife Adventures, Malaysia is at it again! This time removing two nets just 10 days apart. On 5th January the team successfully removed an 80 metre illegal fishing net. This net was one of the worst the team had ever encountered. Not only was it smothering delicate corals but large amounts were sitting up in midwater catching all kinds of marine life. The divers removed the net and also managed to save many creatures such as crabs and stonefish.

On 15th January, another net was spotted by one of the local Divemasters. The staff at Downbelow headed out to remove the net.  James Matthews, Assistant Dive Centre Manager said, “If we hadn’t removed this net it would have been particularly destructive as it was sitting up in mid water above the reef ready to catch anything passing by. Fortunately we managed to save a puffer fish caught in the net.”

This net had it not been removed would have been particularly destructive as it was sitting up in mid water above the reef ready to catch anything passing by. Fortunately we managed to save a puffer fish caught in the net as you can see from one of the pictures I have attached below.
