Plastic bags, small lids and even lollipop sticks were among the 317 pieces of plastic found in the digestive system of a green sea turtle who washed ashore on a New South Whales beach earlier this month.

Crescent Bay, Laguna, CA

Beautiful dive site, without the anthropogenic debris. Thought I was coming upon a large jellyfish, until I got closer and saw the silver inseam down the middle. I stuffed this into my bag on my last dive there, along with an old soda top and a piece of caution tape from the Laguna PD. Perhaps I should have handed it back to them with a citizens lawsuit.

So here’s my first weekly eco blog about diving around Lembongan, Ceningan and Penida!! This week I dived at the new manta point and was delighted to see a new young manta ray there but was soon disappointed when I noticed it had fishing line attached to its right pectoral fin and trailing down it’s back. The manta was still and alone when I saw it and I tried to approach slowly hoping to be able to cut the wire so it wasn’t trailing – I couldn’t get close enough though and the manta slowly swam out into the blue.

This year we conducted 2 beach clean ups, a reef clean up dive & a Coral Watch survey snorkel, all on 22nd April - Dive For Earth Day. We were busy!! These activities were conducted with the involvement of: diving & non diving guests; Blue Guru & Golden Buddha Resort staff and 2 local Thai fishermen.

Downbelow Marine and Wildlife Adventures, Malaysia held a cleanup in November 2010 month at Gaya Island with one very clear message “ Say No to Plastic Bags”. With help from the Asian Tourist International College the group of 30 volunteers collected 280 Kilograms of plastic, 10 kilograms of plastic bottles and 89 kilograms of tyres.
