Blue View Divers Create Better Plastic Karma
August 2010 - Over a two day cleanup event, Blue View Divers on the island of Koh Phi Phi, Thailand collected over 932 kgs of rubbish - around 5% of this amounted to recyclable plastic.
The dive centre was approached by Electrolux's "Vac from the Sea" project. The international project aims to create increased attention on the ocean plastics waste problem and the unsustainable management and use of plastics. Electrolux will create a line of 6 vacuum cleaners made from the recycled plastics collected from 6 different regions around the world. The data collected will now be added to Project AWARE's own cleanup data. Go Phi Phi!
Dive Bequia's First Official Project AWARE Cleanup
During Dive Bequia's first official Project AWARE Cleanup, divers and staff worked together to cleanup one of their most popular diving and snorkeling sites - the beautiful Devil's Table reef. The group recovered commonly found debris such as plastic bags, bottles, cans, fishing line although a chest freezer and tyres were found too adding some quirk to the haul.
Polly Philipson, the cleanup organizer, said "It was great fun for divers, students and staff to work together to preserve a heavily used marine area which is home to a healthy reef. Devil's Table has a huge variety of juvenile fish and critters which is Bequia's best kept secret and we hope to protect this area by being responsible water users".

New Divers of Adventure Divers Club Eager to Make a Difference
June 2010 - Eighteen divers from Adventure Divers Club of New Braunfels Texas, USA collected 300 lbs/ 136 kgs of debris from the Comal River. Most of the items were bottles and cans which were recycled. A number of the divers were recently certified and excited to help give back to the underwater world while enjoying their new found passion. Although this isn't the first cleanup dive the group has conducted it was the most widely attended. The divers were surprised to find less debris than expected, hopefully an indication that their hard work is paying off. To celebrate, the club barbequed throughout the evening.
