Alessandro De Maddalena (Milan, 1970) is one of the world’s foremost shark experts. He’s a researcher, writer, illustrator and photographer. He is 'Dottore Magistrale in Scienze Naturali'. He earned a 'Laurea Magistrale', equivalent to a Master of Science, M.Sc., from the University of Milan. His thesis was on the presence of the great white shark in the Mediterranean Sea.
He is an independent researcher, a collaborator of Apex Shark Expeditions, the curator of the Italian Great White Shark Data Bank, a founding member of the Mediterranean Shark Research Group, a Regional Investigator of the Global Shark Attack File, an Ambassador of the Undersea Soft Encounter Alliance, and a scientific consultant of Sharks Mission France. He is the author or co-author of 19 books on sharks, 35 research reports in peer-reviewed scientific journals and 76 articles in popular and professional magazines, published in 17 Nations.
His photos and illustrations of sharks and other marine animals have appeared in numerous books, scientific journals and popular magazines. He has collaborated with magazines such as Sub, Mondo Sommerso, Il Pesce, EuroFishmarket, Aqva, Quark, Airone, Rivista Marittima, National Geographic Italia, Dive New Zealand, Dive Pacific, The World and I, Annales, Biologie in unserer Zeit, Unterwasser, Tauchen, Duiken, Apnéa, Plongeurs International, Océanorama, Enviromagazin.
From 2010, Alessandro De Maddalena has hosted many Expeditions / Courses in Shark Biology in South Africa that have been operated by Apex Shark Expeditions, owned by Chris and Monique Fallows. From 2014 he co-hosts Expeditions / Courses in Orca Biology in Norway with Pierre Robert de Latour, that are operated by Strømsholmen Sjøsportsenter, owned by Olav Magne Strömsholm. He has also hosted an Expedition Sardine Run / Course in Ichthyology in South Africa that has been operated by Apex Shark Expeditions, and an Expedition / Course in Shark Biology in Australia that has been operated by Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions. He has also given many lectures on shark biology at many universities, museums and diving associations in Europe. From 2006, Alessandro De Maddalena has given lectures in Ichthyology and cetology at the University of Milano-Bicocca. From 2010 he's touring Europe with his lecture The Great White Sharks of South Africa that so far has had over 40 dates with a total attendance of over 4,000 people.
