Bio

I am Marine Conservation Officer for Project AWARE in the Asia Pacific region. I develop science and advocacy based programs for divers and am fortunate to assist many divers and dive centres across Asia Pacific with their conservation projects. Previously I managed sea turtle conservation programs and organised marine conservation projects including a survey of marine fish with volunteer divers. Before this I managed dive operations in Vanuatu and Fiji. My passion and fears for marine environments can be found on my website Silent Reef www.silentreef.com.au

Surfer to diver in 3 days!

Congratulations to Bridget from Coastalwatch for gaining her Open Water Diver certification! It was my pleasure to teach Bridget to dive last weekend as part of a joint project between Project AWARE, PADI and Coastalwatch.

Divers for Marine Protection in SW

Imagine a region where 80% of the marine life is found no where else on earth and the blue whales come to feed! No need to imagine, this is SW Australia - beautiful but under protected. So come on divers, let's rally together - we have till 08 August 2011 to let the Australian Government know we support greater protection for the unique marine life and beautiful marine waters of south west Australia.

DRT Show, Hong Kong

It was great to meet many divers and dive operators at the DRT show in Hong Kong last week. Divers from across the region were keen to learn more about our new Dive Against Debris program and the soon to be released AWARE Shark Conservation Diver Distinctive Specialty course.

Marine Park Campaign Meeting

This week I represented Project AWARE at a national meeting of conservation groups involved in marine park campaigns in Australia. 2011 is a major year for marine parks in Australia with the Federal Government set to announce new marine parks in 4 marine bioregions around the country.

PADI AP staff Dive Against Debris

Sat 11th June staff from PADI's Asia Pacific office completed what is believed to be the first Dive Against Debris survey in the Asia Pacific Region. PADI Course Director Tony Fontes led the dive and gave a stirring dive brief telling us about the importance of removing rubbish from the ocean.

Save the Saddest Dolphins

The pod was swimming peacefully in Samoa when nets closed in from behind -- trapping 25 wild dolphins for a luxury resort's latest exhibit. They are now locked in tiny pens, starved of food -- but we can free them. Sign the petition to help end the live capture dolphin trade.
