Could This Be the Answer to Our Marine Debris Nightmare?

I saw this article and wanted to share it with you. It's about a young guy who has apparently invented a way of collecting all of the marine debris floating in the massive Pacific Garbage Patch (and all the other swirling masses of plastic junk floating in our seas) within 5 years. Furthermore he says that it will be powered by the sun and the water, and will actually make a profit from the recycling money.

Earth Day 2013

On Earth Day 2013 I was busy teaching an Instructor Development Course with Pro Dive Mexico but it didn't stop me, and the IDC candidates, from helping to save the planet!

On Monday 22 April, we made a trip to Cozumel so that the candidates could make the open water presentations, and also have some fun dives on some of the healthiest reef in the Caribbean. Because Cozumel island is a protected marine reserve it's fish population as well as the reef in general, is spectacular.

It would be an appropriate time to use a good English expression this week. That's because I am "well chuffed" that The GoPro Family's story about recycling here in Mexico is featured on Project AWARE's website. The link is at the bottom of this post. I have to say that it's so nice having a yard that is clear of all taht junk, but with another IDC starting in a few days, I have a feeling that it won't be that way for long...

Christmas Update

It is almost Christmas and here at Exotic Island Dive Resort in Malapascua we are busy teaching. From DSD and Open Water to Advanced and Divemaster. I have been teaching all of our DMTs our own PADI Dinstinctive Thresher Shark Specialty Course this week.

Diving Against Debris - Diving for Change

Project AWARE have recently updated their image – a new, grown-up logo as well as, it seems, more grown-up projects.

Amongst divers, Project AWARE are famous for their beach cleanups. Many PADI Instructors and Divemasters, as well as non professional divers, have at one time participated in one of these beach clean-ups arranged all over the world by dive shops, and I am sure that a lot of those divers have at some point questioned their usefulness.
