Litter lined the streets on Wednesday morning after severe Sydney storms toppled all the bins over. It was the perfect windy morning to join the bright and cheery classrooms at Narraweena Kindy for World Oceans Day.

40 five year olds listened intently to all the facts about plastic in the oceans.  All the kids stood up as straight as plastic bottles to hear about how rubbish reaches the beach and where it goes.

Usually we get out the car and I say “Jake stand by that pole until I get your sister out. Do not move.”  A tree, a car, a sign, any object that doesn’t move will do.  

After 30 laps of the ocean pool I wandered down the beach, happy to have a moment to myself.   

In just 10 minutes I'd collected 40 pieces of plastic.

I asked Jake (age 5) if it was pointless plastic or useful plastic. He thought it could be very useful and suggested scientists could actually make something with it. I'm sure all the scientists out there are delighted at the thought!

So in a very short burst of excitement, the kids and I created some fun plastic works of art on the kitchen table.

Plastic dust? Have you heard of it? Tiny, pointless plastic particles washing around in the ocean. Just like sand. But sand belongs there. Plastic doesn’t.

In some parts of the ocean there’s more plastic than plankton. Small pieces of plastic make their way into our food chain. Not to mention what it does to the health of the ocean. And think of the marine life.

Last Friday I had a night out, without the kids. But I didn't go dancing. You’re wondering why not. The answer is simple.

Pointless plastic. It drives me crazy.
