Shark Facts You Should Know!

As a Scuba Diving Instructor and manager of Maui Dreams, I have the opportunity to learn about different aspects of marine life and I get to share that knowledge with the community. As August is Shark Conservation month, Rachel asked me to give a little presentation on sharks of Hawaii. This was great because it focused my attention on some of the most beautiful animals in the ocean. For those of you who could not attend my talk, I would like to share some of my findings.

Maui Bulb Blitz Recap

Thanks to everyone who attended the Maui Bulb Blitz last month and traded their old incandescent bulbs in for CFL's. Thanks to Course Director Chaz and the Maui Civil Air Patrol for hosting the bulb exchange at our shop. We exchanged over 200 bulbs in just four hours - woo hoo!

Maui Dreams Gone Green

I love nature, both above and below the water- you could even say I'm an enthusiast. I try to do my part to recycle, buy locally grown produce, and I pick up rubbish that I find on the ground or during a dive (it makes my little heart flutter to see my fellow divers or students also pick up trash during a dive!). As I was reading the latest Undersea Journal (a professional dive publication), I came across an article about how dive shops are making an effort to ‘go green’ in the sense of making their companies as environmentally friendly as possible.

Sharks Are Not The Enemy!

Scuba instructors, no matter where they might dive, usually hear a certain question just before entering the water. The funny thing is, the same question can mean two different things, depending on how it’s asked—here are both versions:

“Are we going to see sharks on this dive?” (Excited, maybe wants to get a good picture…)

“Are we going to see SHARKS on this dive?!” (Terrified, and just sat through “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel.)
