Release of Hawksbill turtles and some facts about them

Hawksbill Sea Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata)

Oceans 5 dive resort released yesterday another 10 Hawksbill sea turtles. They have been for 6 months at Oceans 5 and they are big enough to join the free ocean.

In the beginning they didnt understood their freedom. It took some time for time to find their way to the water and the way in the water. But finally all found it and hopefully we will see them one day underwater.

Underwater Pyramides around the Gili Islands

The Government of Indonesia has placed 2 underwater pyramides around the Gili Islands.

The structures are made of concrete bloks and are 2 meter by 2 meters and 80 cm high. Coral is planted on the blok, and hopefully it starts growing and it will be a nice coral area in the future.

The local community in Gili Air is taking care of these blocks. Evewry week people will check the coral growth and making the structures clean.

It was Wednesday yesterday. Time for our weekly reef and beach clean up!

This time all the Padi instructor development (IDC) candidates, all our divemaster trainees, fundivers and staff were joining the clean up.

Weekly reef clean up at Oceans 5 Gili Air great success!

Diving around the Gili Islands is fantastic. To make your dives more joyable and to make you more aware about what garbage, rubbish can do with the underwater world, Oceans 5 organise every week beach and reef clean ups.

Beach and reef clean ups during high season at Oceans 5 dive resort Gili Air

It were busy times the last few weeks at the Gili Islands. So I didnt have time to write about the weekly beach and reef clean ups at Oceans 5 dive resort.

Clean ups during high season

Busy day on Gili Air the last 2 months. The high season has started on the Gili Islands, and that didnt gave me time to post about the clean ups.

But during the high season there were also clean ups in the harbor of Gili Air organised by Oceans 5. They were not so urgent as in the rain season, but still the people who joined found rubbish.

Release of a seastar

A few days ago a tourist was waiting for his boat in the harbor of Gili Air. He was carrying a seastar with him.

One of our customers saw it it and asked the person what he was doing. The person wanted to take the seasstar back to Belgium, as a souvenir. After a long talk about not taking things out of the oceans, the person gave the seastar to Pablo. The seastar was at that moment more than 22 hours outof the water.

Turtle release Gili Air 20th July

The Gili Islands are famous for their turtles. All around the 3 little islands on the north side of lombok you will find them. It doesnt matter if you snorkel or dive the turtles are always around.

The most common turtles around the Gili Islands are the Hawksbill and Green Turtle , but there are also Olive Ridleys.

Reef Clean up Gili Air, Gili Islands, 19th July

Yesterday is was clean up day at Oceans 5 dive dive resort gili islands. It means clean up the beach, the oceans and the reefs in front of Oceans 5.

Oceans 5 is located in the harbor of Gili Air. All the fast boats from Bali are arriving there and that means a lot of tourist leave their garbage behind and that dissapear in the ocean.
