In June of 2003 GVI opened their first Marine Expedition base in the Sian Ka`an biosphere reserve.  Pez Maya is a conservation group that works directly on monitoring the overall health of the reef.  We monitor turtle nesting, bird abundancy and population, mega fauna, and beach cleans as well.  We have a community project in Punta Allen for teaching English, and we are in the process of building a recycling center for the town.
