Have just finished a massive 2011 survey of most of the reefs in Sabah looking for remnant shark populations. In 1996 my team surveyed over 360 dive sites for coral and fish abundance and counted the sharks. This survey is a repeat and the results are very sad, where we had 100 sharks in 1996/97 we now have 2. That's a 98% fall...

The Green Connection
I am a marine scientist working on coral reef and shark conservation. I created the Green Connection Aquarium & Science Discovery centre in Kota Kinabalu Sabah, Borneo to promote environmental awareness. Dive in the shark tank, volunteer or simply visit http://aquaticakk.org
Tropical research and Conservation Centre
TRACC is a non profit organisation that does marine conservation and research. We teach marine biology courses, Marine science A level course, support MSc and other students. We plant coral, save turtles, protect sharks and use volunteers for marine conservation.
Global Shark Survey
I am conducting the Global Shark Survey. This is a diver record survey to use the dive log data from divers all over the world to determine where sharks still exist and where they have disappeared from. At last count in Aug 2011 we had data for over 2500 sites around the world, mostly with records of no sharks seen. We need your help - please add the data from your log books or from your most recent dives.
Diving volunteer programme
I also run a volunteer / Intern programme which is replanting a coral reef near Sipadan, Semporna, Sabah. The shallow water reef was very badly damaged by blast fishing prior to the resort being built. The deep reef has some excellent coral and amazing diversity. The beaches get large numbers of nesting green turtles and there are always many turtles in the shallows. The island has deep oceanic water immediately off the beach and for several summer months there are schools of bait fish being chased by tuna, marlin and sharks. The site is in the coral triangle which has the most diversity for any coral reefs anywhere in the world. Volunteers range from 6-12 weeks doing student projects or learning reef survey techniques to short term volunteers of 7-14 days who plant coral, count turtles or help with surveys. If you want to dive some of the best dive sites in the world, consider diving with a conservation purpose for part of your holiday.
