The Reef Dive Resort is situated on Mataking Island, Borneo and is a PADI 5 stars Resort.

The resort is situated on a Coral Cay, about 35 minutes boat journey from the local fishing town of Semporna, and consists of a Dive Centre with Nitrox facilities, Spa, and 3 levels of accomodation in 37 separate units.

The resort has 120 loyal staff and is the only resort on 2 islands separated by a small sandbar connecting the two.

Our guests are a vibrant mix of both local Asian guests and International guests from all over the globe and we teach all levels of diving from PADI DSD up to Divemaster, specialising in PADI affiliated courses only.

We have an active Marine Biology Unit at the resort, a busy turtle hatcheries, releasing up to 5000 baby Hawksbill and Green Turtles each year and are active marine conservationists at the island, operating numerous Project Aware affiliated events each year.

WWF Malaysia monthly monitoring

On the 7th Jan 2013, we were visited by WWF Malaysia and Sabah Wildlife Department for the monthly Sea Turtle Conservation monitoring. Our marine biologist were sharing data and discussing problems regarding sea turtle conservation with them.

During the recent workshop organised by Sabah Wildlife Department and WWF-Malaysia last year, a collaborative managemnet body to manage and conserve marine turtles in the northeast islands of the Semporna Priority Conservation Area (PCA) was formed.

Future Conservation Effort - Saving the coral community

We plan to have our own coral nursery - Mataking's Coral Nursery!

We will create three coral table to be deploy at three different location of our house reef. We had select the suitable spot to deploy our coral table.

The coral that we will have at our coral nursery is the hard coral from Acropora sp. The coral that grow to the right size, will be put into the wild coral community to enhance the area that been damaged by destructive fishing method.

Baby turtles first journey.

It's been quiet a long time that we don't update any of our conservation activity here and we would like to share our conservation routine of releasing the hatched baby turtles from our hatchery to the Celebes Sea.

The nesting season of sea turtle is not here yet,so we only have few nest in our hatchery and this nest that hatched yesterday, 14th December 2012 is sponsored by our guest, Mike and Kathie. We release 95 babies yesterday out of 112 eggs that burried in the nest.

Miracles Happen at Mataking - witnessing a Green Turtle giving birth!

Miracles really do happen at Mataking!

At about midday today, 2 of our guests from the UK, Chris and Alex Jordan witnessed a flurry of sand coming from the end of the beach next to the palm trees, with some strange tracks leading up to it.

The return of the white tip reef shark at the resort!

Positive action sees a return of the White Tip Reef Shark at Humphead Point!

Years before the resort was built on the island, the reefs around the resort were subject to aggressive and illegal fishing practices including destructive fish-bombing which resulted in the total removal of the shark population in the immediate area.

Since we have become far more proactive in our response in this issue we are delighted to announce that slowly but surely, the sharks are coming back to the area.

Mataking Island creates its 3rd Artificial reef.

Today, Thursday 16th June 2011, The Reef Dive Resort at Mataking Island, Borneo began the creation of its 3rd artificial reef project in the area.

Building on the successes of 2 previous shipwreck reefs submerged in 2006 and 2009, this new innovative reef is being constructed in 3 distinct phases.

June Quarter Island News from Mataking

Welcome to this our second edition of the Mataking Island Newsletter for 2011!

Since our last newsletter in February, it has been a total hive of activity at the resort yet again as we have been gearing up for the peak season ahead and been busy making your resort bigger and better.

Professionalism has been the name of the game in this quarter as we have commenced our unique EFL English training with our front-line staff as well as beginning a full scale reef restoration and rejuvenation project on our House Reef.
