Im Sam Brodie, 21 English and a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer

I graduated from University in Bangor North Wales with a degree in Marine Vertebrate Zoology. So protecting the environment is very close to my heart having studied and grown up around the Ocean. I Believe that protecting the worlds oceans should be one of the primary concerns of the world as we know it which Is why at university I was heavily involved in beach clean ups and other conservation activities.

Im currently doing an internship for IDC Staff instructor at Dive Downbelow, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.

Edgel Patches Net Removal - Massive!

A huge net was found on Edgel Patches, Kota Kinabalu by Downbelow staff, Resident CD Richard Swann got together a team consisting on Interns and Staff members. Together the 15 strong man team set about getting rid of the menace! I was buddied with one of the other interns Stefan bucheler IDC intern from Australia. We descended along the line whihc had been attached to the net, and got to work on it. After freeing crustaceans in the net and getting together a bundle of the net it was our time to ascend to the surface. The good news is the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is one Gillnet less!

Black Coral Reef Net Removal 23/11/12 - 24/11/12

Resident Downbelow CD Richard Swann discovered a fishing net stretching almost 100m long across the reef. He gathered a group of Staff, Interns and Sabah Park Officers to remove the net. We managed to remove most of it on the first day and on the second day Me and a team of three other interns went down to finish off the job! Hopefully that will be the end of that net on the reef.

Finathon! Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia

On the 4th of November, Dive Downbelow Marine and Wildlife Adventures hosted the first Finathon event. This event is the first of its kind on a global scale. The objective was to swim 1km with mask fins and snorkel to raise money for Project AWARE and that money is going to be used to help stop shark finning globally.
