I am a diving instructor who loves everything about the underwater world - but especially manta rays!! I am lucky enough to live and work on the beautiful Balinese island of Nusa Lembongan where I dive almost everyday teaching courses or just for fun! The waters around the island are full of beautiful corals and lots of fish - what more do you need?!!?

Fish Feeding Bottles On The House Reef

Fish feeding bottles are still accumulating on the House Reef. Yesterday I removed another full bag of bottles BUT hopefully things will start to change. I am going to approach charter boats who use the House Reef for snorkelling and other water activities and in order to try and put a stop to the marine debris which seems to be building up more and more each year. Hopefully we will see a difference soon.

Not 1, Not 2 BUT 26!!

Yesterday diving out on the House Reef with one student I was disappointed to notice that a huge amount of plastic bottles had once again accumulated. In total my student and I managed to recover 26 of the small plastic drinking bottles. Almost all of the bottles still had lids screwed on and each lid had a small hole drilled into the top of it. Fish feeding. The bottles come from snorkelling boats and other tourist boats using the area.

Going Green - Along With The Bin!

So, it's not just all about cleaning up, cleaning the beach and diving for debris - we all have to try and be proactive, not just reactive and here's my attempt at doing just that! As such a lot of the trash along the beach and at the House Reef consists of plastic bottles I have spent a rather hot afternoon labelling up a newly purchased green bin as a 'recycling' bin. I have tied it to a tree in view of the rooms here, dive center AND people walking along the beach and written a request for plastic bottles on it.

One person, one bag - it all counts!

Another dive on the House Reef this week and another opportunity to take out my clean up bag and do some debris collection along the way. I wasn't specifically diving for debris - just taking out a dive but as always I had my trusty Project AWARE clean up bag stashed in my BCD pocket and decided to put it to use... again! It might only be one big plastic bottle and 4 small ones but imagine if every diver did this on every dive! What a difference that would make to our reefs world wide!

Another Successful Beach Clean Up!

Yesterday - Friday 17th February I went out at 7am for a beach clean up again - the beach was noticeably improved since the last clean up and I worked on cleaning away piles of rubbish left at the top of the beach by the sea weed farmers. These piles have actually become rubbish tips for the sea weed farming community. Working on the basis that people will drop trash where there is trash already but if it is all cleared away then no-one will drop trash on to clean patches of beach hopefully these areas will now stay clean - watch this space!!!

New Manta: 'Clover' Joins The Database!

Diving at Batu Lumbung yesterday on the South coast of Nusa Penida was fantastic with mantas feeding in the plankton rich water. The highlight of the dive was managing to get pictures of a 'new' manta - Clover! Clover is a female manta alfredi, approximately 3.5 metres from pectoral fin tip to pectoral fin tip. Clover has been given her name due to the 4 patches in the rear, right hand side, shaped in a triangular pattern on her ventral side.

Following realising that the strong winds we have had over the past couple of weeks have caused build ups of debris (sadly mainly garbage and plastic) to accumulate on the beach last week we organised a huge clean up. It was great to see that so many people joined!! Not just dive centers and divers but also hotel owners and staff, restaurant workers and lots of people both local and foreign who wanted to help. A big, big thank you to everyone!!

Cleaning and Caring for Lembongan Beach.

Strong winds and heavy rainfall have caused a huge increase in the amount of trash being washed up on the beaches around Lembongan so I have decided that for some jobs one girl is not enough! To help clean the beach I will be out at 7am on Friday morning cleaning the beach along with the support of numerous Lembongan based dive centers. We have put posters up along the beach in Indonesian and English and we are hoping there will be lots of people coming along to support us too!!

Here's To A Clean Reef in 2012!

Yesterday I made my first dives of 2012 and started the year as I mean to go on - by cleaning up!!! I came back witha bundle of beers cans - Please note all beer drinking individuals: Coral reefs and their inhabitants do NOT like beer!! Other than that there were a few bits of plastic floating around but it was generally not bad. The winds are picking up around the islands again now though so it is usually at this time of year that we see an increase of trash around - I'm ready to dive for it - are you?
