Sunshine is at it again, our monthly clean-up was a success with an estimated haul of 54 kilos! The clean-up was a combined effort of 12 instructors, dmt's and fun divers from Sunshine led by Sarah Van Name and a group of 9 DMT's from Ban's led by Lee Nightingale. Armed with gloves, bags, knives and smb's the groups spread out across Mae Haad Bay in the heart of Koh Tao. This is the main pier area so everyone was extremely careful to steer clear of the boat lanes. Some interesting finds included several rice cookers, a very old camera and a lighter in the shape of a gun.

Another successful day here on Koh Tao. On the 28th of January 14 instructors, DMT's and fun divers conducted a land and underwater clean-up of over 2 and a half hours, covering 4,500 square meters and collecting over 50 kilos of trash! One exciting observation was only 3 batteries were collected. Does this mean that batteries are being disposed of in the proper way? We hope so!

Three of our DMT's, led by instructors Sarah Van Name and Scott Butz, conducted a monitoring project of our adopted nursery off of Sairee Beach on Koh Tao. First, they were given a lecture by Sarah, detailing what coral is, what it needs to survive and threats to it's health. On dive one, they conducted a coral health check, counted missing corals and searched for and collected threatened fragments near the shore. Back on the boat, with the fragments safe in a bucket of salt water, the instructors went through the fragments showing which ones were good for transplant and why.

It is our pleasure to announce that whaleshark sightings have greatly increased on Koh Tao with over 5 whalesharks sighted by Sunshine Divers in the past week. We hope everyone enjoys these majestic creatures while remembering these following general guidelines, promoted by The Shark Trust, the Australian Department of Conservation and Land Management, and PADI the Project AWARE Foundation and Save Koh Tao for both your own safety and for the safety of the sharks.
