Action Highlights

Thanks to everyone that participated in our Dive Against Debris event.  We appreciate Tampa Bay Watch allowing us to participate in their Great American Cleanup 2014 event.  We collected a total of 540 pounds of marine debris off the Fort Desoto Pier.  Great job to all!  MORE
Well our Finathon at The Scuba Shop is now over but it has truly just begun. As a shop we raised over $2300 that Project Aware will now put to work for a great cause. My team at The Scuba Shop and our partners at Aqua-Tots swim school put together a great event and all had fun. Our supporters for the event were our wonderful customers, families, friends, and co-workers. As you also see from our pictures, we had Sharky the mascot from SeaLife Aquariums join us, the kids and the adults loved the photo op with the shark mascot. MORE
Every month a underwater clean up is organized among diveschools at Koh Tao. Last month diveschools worked very close together. Sunshine and BAN's DMT's joined the Crystal Divers boat for the underwater clean up! Reason for this was that neither Sunshine or BAN's have a boat to participate due to the rush at that time. MORE

Again we got the usual Eco Warriors together for another clean up of Haad Salad Reef on Koh Phangan, a few days previous to this I took Dan on a peak performance buoyancy specialty and learnt that alot of coral on the east side of the reef around 3-7m was covered in nets, bottles, anchors and plastic bags. So I set out on a mission to assemble the Eco Warriors lol That being said its not exactly hard becuase we all love diving haad salad reef with good vis and recently we have been blessed by the gods of diving visibility.

Today we had a great cleanup at one of our favorite dive spots, the Rompeolas, which also turns out to be one of the more popular spots for locals to hang out and do some fishing. We cleaned over 36,000m2 underwater thanks to the help from our 16 volunteers. The activity went on without a hitch. Everyone made their dive plan, and dove it in buddy teams. We even had Scallywag the Vieques Diving Dog help us out with the cleanup! Around 120lbs of trash were collected and sorted. What was the item we found most? Cans. Specially beer cans and fishing line with hooks and sinkers.

Today was a good day!

I can say that. Not because there were 26 of us, not because we had an entire boat to ourselves and not even because it was yet another sunny day in Utila. Today was a good day because our Dive Against Debris yielded less debris than we actually anticipated. That's a win for the Bay Islands and its reefs!
