Action Highlights

Clean the beach, clean your soul!

What better way to end the year than by teaming up with a group of local enthousiasts to give back to mother nature. On December 30th, 2013 Bay Islands College of Diving teamed up with the Utila Iguana Research and Breeding Station to give the beautiful little Airport beach a much deserved make-over.

Utila's newly elected mayor, Troy Bodden, reacted swiftly to the Facebook call to action to provide a truck and driver for the day to bring about 25 volounteers to the north-east side of our beautiful island.

Big Blue held another dive against debris last Friday, which happened to be Unity day here in Vanuatu. The dive took place just off the beach at Ifira point outside the boat yard. 10 volunteer divers took part and we collected 380kg of rubbish from the sea. We found a lot of general household rubbish in the sea at Ifira point.  In one hour 10 people collected 103 plastic bags, 209 plastic food wrappers, 5 nappies and 80 pieces of plastic.

It was a great day in Nova Scotia. Project Aware Dive against Debris was launched on the sunny shores of St Margret's Bay.  Mill Cove Jetty was the first subject location of a dedicated team of Eco friendly divers who braved the cool North Atlantic water to help clean up underwater debris.  A large amount of debris was collected and properly disposed of! Many thanks to all who participated!

Stayed tuned as this team of dive professionals ventures out each month throughout the cold Canadian winter for updates!!!

On Saturday, October 12, 2013, 108 volunteer divers collected their tanks from Dive Friends Bonaire @ Port Bonaire and headed over to Te Amo Beach.  This is the beach that was recently made famous online when volunteers from Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire formed a human wall during a hatching to keep the baby sea turtles from being disoriented by the lights from Bonaire’s Flamingo Airport.

Trip 101 on the 27th of October

I will be getting everybody involved in a reef debris clean up during the whole trip....and for a few more trips after that also.....

As the SimilanIslands will be opening their doors once more to hundreds of divers this season, I see the first few trips as an ideal oportunity to remove old nets, lines and whatever else we find from the closed diving season.
