Divers for Cleaner Lakes and Oceans

My name is Henry Wang and I am the former owner of The Edge centre in North Vancouver BC, Canada. I have been scuba diving in the Vancouver BC Canada area since 2004. For the past seven years, I have been involved in marine and ocean conservancy projects in one way or another. Recently, some of my dive partners and I began exploring some of our local lakes and ocean shoreline areas that have a lot of underwater garbage accumulation.

Divers for Cleaner Lakes and Oceans

What we found was quite shocking so we began a grassroots effort to remove all the garbage from these bodies of water. Often it is quite easy to remove large amounts of junk during your regular dive by just by picking up discarded beer bottles and crab traps. Other times, a popular party lake can contain enormous amounts of trash within just a few hundred square meters and that requires special attention from us.

Today is a good example. In a 45 min dive, we removed 238 lbs of garbage. The most impressive numbers are 184 beer bottles and 274 beer cans. Of course this does not include the hundreds of other pieces of garbage. This brings our total garbage removal since the inception of our group to 579.6 lbs.

We quickly realized that we needed more cleaning supplies and equipment. One of the problems that we are encountering is that we are actually hauling out more garbage on a single dive day, than what we can physically fit in our 3/4 ton pick up truck. So in addition to raising money for some of the more cleaning supplies, such as gloves and garbage bags, we are raising money to purchase a trailer that is capable of hauling 2,200 kg (5,000 lbs) of garbage at a time. It would allow us to be significantly more mobile, removing more garbage with each trip. We hope that by removing the often unseen and ignored garbage that is underwater in our waterways, we can pass on a cleaner and healthier environment to our next generation.
