Threatened animals are specific animals whose populations are becoming so small they are in danger of becoming endangered or extinct. Some critters may be threatened all over the world, while other populations are dwindling in just one region.

A few examples of threatened underwater animals are West Indian manatees, Hawaiian monk seals, humpback whales, coho salmon, southern river otters and all seven species of sea turtles. What are some reasons for their decline? Habitat loss, pollution, overfishing and disease are a few of the culprits.

But don’t say “adios” to these critters yet! There are ways to protect them. In fact, natural habitats in the form of reserves and marine protected areas are being set aside to provide food, shelter and space for underwater animals to grow and survive. Laws are being passed to control fishing and hunting. And, scientists are studying ways that we can all help to protect underwater animals in the future.

To complete your threatened underwater animal mission, follow these instructions:

1. Research online or at your local library threatened animals that live in the water. Pick one you’re interested in, maybe one from your local lake, river or ocean environment.

2. Write or email Project AWARE and tell us why you like this animal and why you think it should be protected. Report why you think it's threatened and suggest one specific step people can take to protect it. If you decide to send a letter, include a drawing of this animal with your report. You might also use this as a special report in school!
