PADI & Partners
PADI – The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), the world’s largest scuba diver training organization, established Project AWARE in 1989. Today Project AWARE Foundation is a separate nonprofit organization that raises its own funds and drives its own mission and goals. But, our partnership with PADI is still extremely important. Not only does PADI support the Foundation with in-kind services and connect us with a network of divers and professionals around the world, it helps Project AWARE raise funds through PADI’s certification card processing system. Find out more about PADI, visit www.padi.com
PADI Professional Members – Our partnership with PADI Professional Members around the world is essential in powering global conservation activities and programs. PADI Pros teach, lead and engage in local conservation. They match business goals with ocean protection initiatives. Project AWARE would not be able to achieve our goals and mission without their support. Visit the Action Zone to learn more about PADI Pros around the world who are supporting Project AWARE programs.
CoralWatch, University of Queensland – Project AWARE partners with University of Queensland’s CoralWatch, a non-profit research organization, to involve divers in coral health monitoring. The aim of this research project is to provide information to scientists about coral bleaching and climate change worldwide.
Ocean Conservancy – Ocean Conservancy is a non-profit advocacy organization promoting healthy and diverse ocean ecosystems. Project AWARE partners with the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup Day to engage citizens in removing marine debris, identifying its sources and changing practices and behaviors that cause marine debris in the first place.

Memberships & Alliances
Shark Alliance – Project AWARE is a steering group member of the Shark Alliance, a global, not-for-profit coalition of non-governmental organizations dedicated to restoring and conserving shark populations by improving shark conservation policies.
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) - Project AWARE is an International Non-government Organization member of IUCN, the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network. IUCN, home of the Red List of Threatened Species, is a democratic membership union with more than 1,000 government and NGO member organizations, and almost 11,000 volunteer scientists in more than 160 countries.
International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) - As an NGO member of ICRI, Project AWARE partners among governments, international organizations, and non-government organizations to preserve coral reefs and related ecosystems by implementing relevant international conventions and agreements. Project AWARE’s work with ICRI includes a particular focus on policy work related to the importance of sharks in coral reef environments as well as the establishment of marine protected areas worldwide.
Protect Our Coral Sea - Protect Our Coral Sea is a joint campaign supported by regional, national and international conservation groups. Project AWARE partners with POCS to establish a large, fully protected marine park in the Coral Sea, Australia, where thriving populations of large ocean fish as well as many endangered marine species still remain.
Save Our Marine Life - Save Our Marine Life is a collaboration of conservation groups working to establish a network of large marine sanctuaries in Australia's south west. Up to 90 percent of the species found in this region are found nowhere else in the world and Project AWARE partners in the effort to establish a network of large, fully protected marine sanctuaries.
Marine Fish Conservation Network – This network is the largest U.S. coalition dedicated to promoting the long-term sustainability of marine fish, ecosystems and fisheries. Project AWARE, together with many other environmental organizations, commercial and recreational fishing associations, aquariums, and marine science groups, work with policymakers and managers for improved ocean conservation and better fisheries management.
Boomerang Alliance - As a member of the Boomerang Alliance, Project AWARE works with other leading environment groups for zero waste in Australia. The Alliance's main campaign is for a national Container Deposit Scheme to place a value on used drinks containers and encourage recycling. Australians use almost 13 billion drinks containers a year, of which only around 40% are recycled. The remainder are littered or dumped in landfill. Worldwide, similar schemes have reduced the energy, water and raw materials needed to create new containers and created thousands of new jobs, in addition to leading to a cleaner environment.
CITES4Sharks - As a member of the CITES coalition, Project AWARE works with shark experts and NGOs to secure CITES listings for shark and ray species at the 16th Conference of Parties in March 2013.
