Overfishing, bycatch and finning. You understand the tough problems facing shark populations worldwide and that divers can take significant steps to secure a brighter future for sharks. Follow these steps to mobilise your troops into action.
Step 1: Collect Petition Signatures & Run Your Own Signature Drive
2012 is shaping up to be our biggest push for shark protection yet. The Parties to the Convention in International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) meet in March 2013 in Thailand. We need all the petition signatures we can get to show CITES representatives that divers mean business for shark protection.
- Add the shark petition widget to your website or blog and collect signatures on the web. Collect signatures on Facebook with the Take Action Facebook App.
- Place the petition on your shop counter, classroom or dive boat. Once the sheet is full send it back to us.
- Available in English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Spanish, German, Italian and French. We're spreading the message across the globe.
Step 2: Teach the AWARE Shark Conservation Diver Distinctive Specialty Course
Turn your divers and nondivers into passionate shark defenders.
- Download the Instructor Guide, Lesson Guides and Student Study Guide. Apply for your AWARE Shark Conservation Diver Distinctive Specialty Instructor rating through PADI and they will donate your Instructor rating fee to Project AWARE.
- Reward your nondivers with a Program Participation Certificate. The Course can also be taught as an Adventure Dive giving you more opportunities to incorporate into your teaching.
(Instructor Guide is available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.
- Put your shark courses on the Project AWARE Action Zone map (hint: you need to be logged into My Ocean to add your action or event).
Step 3: Show You Care
- Add a web banner to your website using our HTML coding.
- Display the Give Sharks a Fighting Chance sign in your facility.
- Embed the Sharks In Peril video onto your website or feature it in your next newsletter.
- Share your shark action on your My Ocean profile, your own website and social networks.
Spread the word. Divers are on the move and we won't rest until the world's most threatened sharks receive protection.
