Endangered Species Day, 17 May

Project AWARE News

Endangered Species Day is an opportunity to learn about the importance of endangered species and actions we can take to protect them. Scuba divers, with a passion for the ocean like no other, are naturally concerned about decline in marine species.

The good news is, we’re a strong voice and we’re achieving major milestones together. Just recently, we won campaigns to list oceanic whitetip sharks, porbeagles, three species of hammerheads and both manta rays under CITES.

What’s next? Join the Finathon™! Like a walkathon or marathon – the Finathon is a great way to bring a community together, raise awareness about sharks and rays at risk and challenge funds to support a unique cause.

“The major problem with protecting marine life is people are less aware of it as they do not see it from day to day. So awareness and promotion through amazing events such as the Finathon is great in bringing attention to the aquatic problems and the decline of sharks,’’ said Andrew Barrett of the Calypso Diving Finathon Team in the Philippines

On Endangered Species Day this year, consider rallying your friends and dive buddies in a Finathon challenge and get swimming to end finning.
