Scuba Divers wanted this weekend for sponsored swim and Dive Against Debris”Scuba Cat Diving
In a double bid to clean the waters of Patong and raise awareness for shark protection Scuba Cat Diving is hosting a Dive Against Debris and a Get Swimming to End Shark Finning(Finathon) this Saturday, February 16th 2013 at Paradise Reef, Patong.
The event named “We Belong To The Sea” spotlights scuba divers unique ability to tackle global marine debris and shark finning issues.
“As a part of Scuba Cat’s commitment to protecting nature and the ocean, trained divers will not only remove underwater debris such as trash, fishing lines, bottles and cans but also identify and document everything in a effort to prevent marine debris. At the same time there will be a sponsored swim to gain the public awareness and highlight shark finning issues,” says Ms Sarah Kench, General Manager, Scuba Cat Diving.
Scuba Cat along with divers around the world is demanding a permanent reduction in and prevention of the garbage we create, that damages sensitive marine ecosystems.
The event is also a fundraiser with all funds raised helping Project AWARE:
- Fight to stop shark finning
- Insist on full protections for critically endangered sharks
- Negotiate stronger policies to ensure a brighter future for all sharks
“Finning kills thousands of sharks every day. This cruel and wasteful practice involves slicing off the sharks’ fins and throwing the body overboard. Unable to swim, the shark bleeds to death or drowns. Shark fishing is largely unregulated in most of the world’s oceans,” said Joanna McNamara, Coordinator, Project AWARE Foundation.
"Together divers have a powerful, collective voice to secure protection for endangered shark species worldwide. Project AWARE encourages all divers in and around Phuket to get involved in the Scuba Cat event to make a lasting difference," added Joanna.
