The PADI Instructor Development Course held this month allocated time during one Open Water presentations to conduct an underwater clean up at Sunshine Divers Adopt the Reef site , Lighthouse Bay on Koh Tao.
During our IDC Curriculum we incorporate a Project Aware Lecture introducing the students to the Project Aware website, and My Ocean Page informing them how to conduct the Marine Debri Data processing and to further find out information about Shark Conservation and other projects.
On the 10th February 11 IDC Candidates, Sunshine staff and Ban's Course Directors participated in the clean up collecting up to an estimated amount of 80 kg of rubbish. We realized that due to the recent heavy rain and flooding around Koh Tao and southern parts of Thailand, that this was reason the majority of debri has accumulated in the bay. Especially as Lighthouse is generally sheltered during certain times of the year, fisherman tend to moor up in these areas and dispose of their garbage.
Marine Debri items included plastic bags, (retail, shopping, and garbage bags), plastic bottles and wrappers. This is a huge concern for us in this area as Lighthouse bay is home to a few turtles and aquatic species and the corals are incredibly healthy and beautiful in this bay, we would like to protect and prevent from any injuries that may be due to plastic.
Thank you new instructors in helping with the clean-up and passing on your knowledge to others to assist us with the process in keeping our dive sites clean!
