My Summary

Oceans Project Georgia (OPG) is a 32 week environmental education NGO for young people aged 12-25 based mainly in the Caucasus in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia.  Based on the BBC Oceans television series, we tackle issues related to the ocean and learn snorkel diving, go on river clean ups, and are raising money to participate in scientific and archaeological research expeditions with Earthwatch Institute.  Our project was started by a group of 12 year olds who wanted to learn about the world around them, and on 26th January 2013, we will be launching a free, online version of our course, as a tool for anyone anywhere in the world to use.

Four of our voluntary project leaders are currently training hard for an ocean row from Monteray to Australia, as part of a Pacific Ocean race to Hawaii, and from there will continue onwards, calling at islands on the way to do outreach work with children, and to collect maritime archaeology data.  Prior to the row, our ocean rowing boat will be on display in the UK and young people will have the chance to doodle or write on it, in reponse to the question 'what does the ocean mean to you?'  In this way, our boat will become a piece of a art and a message that connects the young people that we meet to help them become global citizens and to show man's reliance on the water around us.  More about the ocean row here:
